Movie casting is a long and difficult procedure for those involved in the casting. Performers are not hired by the production company; instead, they are hired by the casting company that works for the production company. Sometimes they will send a 'side', or a small portion of the script for the agent to read and get comfortable with before their audition.
The role of the background directors is not as complex, but is still necessary and important. The background directors send in a list of background performers they need, and the people who respond do not usually need to audition for these roles. At the time of performance, the principal directors will cipher through their list of auditioners and watch them perform different acts so the prospect can demonstrate different aspects of their talent. For instance, they will audition a sad part, a happy part, or a part that makes them angry. Some actors will have a few pieces of the script already memorized, but most auditions are done with 'cold readings', which means the performance, is based on non-memorized scripts.
Movie casting is a long process but is necessary in order to find the perfect actor or actress for a part in a movie. Principal and background casting directors are both essential functions of the casting process, but getting in with the principal casting director is the way to go for that lead role.
